BEAUTY BREAKDOWN: Janelle Monae's Fruit Pigmented Met Gala Makeup

Janelle Monae’s beauty is undeniable. Since she’s been showing off so much more of her creamy soft cocoa skin, we’ve all been wanting to know how she pulls off her camera ready looks. Makeup artist Jessica Smalls worked with the GRAMMY nominated musician to complete a beauty look that was appropriate for the campy-themed event, and true to Janelle’s aesthetic for the Met Gala.

“Janelle’s Met Gala makeup had to shimmer and shine. I wanted the cameras and light to catch the sophisticated glitter pop of her eyes and the radiant glow from her skin,” said Smalls. “I wanted Janelle to look like she was going to a ball hosted by Michelle Obama.”

For face: To start the makeup look, Jessica used the 100% PURE Luminous Primer to soften Janelle’s skin, and to ensure that the look would last through the night. Them as a base, she used the 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation. To get the right color match, she mixed shades Mousse and Cocoa together and blended them on the skin, then corrected with 100% PURE 2nd Skin Concealer in Shade 6.

For cheeks: She warmed up the face with 100% PURE Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer in Cocoa Glow and a dab of Fruit Pigmented Pot Rouge Blush in Posey on the apples of the cheeks.

For eyes: Jessica started out with a mix of colors from the 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Rose Gold Palette. Then, she layered Fruit Pigmented Eye Shadows in Bronze in her crease, and Teddy on her lid. She lined the full eye with 100% PURE Creamy Long Last Liner in Blackest and finished them off with 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara in Black Tea, with lashify lashes to fill, and amp up the drama. She also added some pink glitter on the lids to give a little extra sparkle.

For lips: Jessica lined Janelle’s lips with brown liner and followed with 100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick in Agave. To add shine, she finished with a lip gloss, then set the final look with a face mist.
